Dartmoor
offers riding without parallel! Covering more than 300 square miles
it is England's largest wilderness. Our riding on the moor is unrestricted
- we ride where there are no metalled roads and hardly any traffic.
This is an ideal destination for intrepid and adventurous riders. The
scenery varies dramatically, from wild and remote granite tors to gentle
purple heather and yellow gorse-covered slopes.
Hidden
deep in the moor, rolling expanses
of old turf provide some of the finest gallops in the world and many
of the ancient stone faced ditches and banks, crumbling stone walls and
rushing brooks on Dartmoor provide ideal natural obstacles for jumping. For the less experienced we offer gentle rides through stunning scenery. All rides are escorted.
| We
offer • morning
or afternoon rides,
• day
pub rides,
• and
shorter rides by the hour.

About
the owner
Mrs Rosemary Hooley owns Skaigh Stables and is assisted by a young,
carefully selected team who know and love horses and the moor.
Mrs Hooley herself has had a lifetime's experience with horses and is
well-known throughout the West Country for her riding and sporting activities.
She has been breaking, training, breeding and making all-round performance
horses for years.
Who comes to ride at Skaigh?
Our guests come from all walks of life and many different countries.
Most people have ridden before, but beginners are welcome provided they
are bold, agile and genuinely keen to make progress.
Many guests come back year after year for the freedom of riding on Dartmoor
and the joy of riding horses that help them improve their horsemanship.
When to come
We are open from 31st March until 31st October. July and August are
our busiest months so you will need to book early for these and Bank Holidays and half term weeks. Those who
can arrange to take breaks earlier or later in the year will avoid crowds
and see the moor at its loveliest.
The Riding
Our horses are fit and sure footed across Dartmoor. We have mounts to
suit all riding abilities: there is an upper weight limit of 17 stone/ 120 kilos.
Our horses love the moor as much as we do and you will find your mount
willing and responsive.
Established
in 1964, Skaigh Stables is neither a trekking centre nor a riding school;
nevertheless, we will be happy to give instruction
whilst riding on the moor.
